Lake Symington and Big Beef Creek Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC) Program
TOX_0063
This project will assess nutrient levels in Lake William Symington and along Big Beef Creek which drains to Hood Canal 2 shellfish growing area in Kitsap County. Water quality data shows elevated levels of phosphorous in the lake, sporadic algae blooms, and reductions of dissolved oxygen (DO) in Big Beef creek which directly impact the Hood Canal 2 shellfish growing area. There is dense residential development around the lake consisting of homes served by aging onsite septic systems (OSS).
Kitsap Public Health will implement its Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC) methodology to reduce nutrients and fecal bacteria to protect water quality. Kitsap Public Health will assess residential sources of nutrient pollution. The activities of the project include routine water quality monitoring to include bacteria, nutrient, and physical parameters such as dissolved oxygen and temperature, an evaluation of land use practices including inspections of OSS, the use of fertilizers, and an educational component for the dissemination of information and resources to the public. Kitsap Public Health will coordinate their efforts and engage the local Lake William Symington Community Club.
